In 1995, Sawyer sponsored a Little League baseball team in Nicholasville, Kentucky, with the team name Be Kind for the kids to wear on their backs.

Violence has visited Sawyer several times by murder taking two older brothers and a nephew.

Like Barry Bonds and Cal Ripken, Jr., Sawyer lost his dad from his smoking addiction. Sawyer was only eleven years old.

Sawyer was a former bookie and professional poker player before receiving his Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky in 1992.
